The
Hunt
Located in the heart of the Central Flyway, the area in which
you will be hunting is located close to Lake Diefenbaker and Luck
Lake, a large Ducks Unlimited project. The close proximity of
large bodies of water make this a popular area for waterfowl as
they migrate south. Thousands of Whitefronts (Specks), Snows and
Canada Geese pass through this area. Mallards, Pintail and Gadwall
and many other types of ducks also make this annual stop on their
migration south. Sandhill Cranes and excellent upland game hunting
round out the experience.

Doug
Erickson, the owner, will be your main guide. He was raised on
a farm three miles from the Luck Lake Ducks Unlimited Project
and has hunted in the area all his life and knows the general
patterns of birds as well as the landowners, ensuring good success.
You will hunt over 10 to 30 dozen decoys depending on the time
of year, primarily in pea and wheat fields. Spreads will be comprised
of full body and shell decoys as well as flying and spinning decoys
to add movement to the spread. Most of the hunting will be done
out of blinds or by laying in the decoys. You may also hunt out
of goose chairs, which are not only comfortable, but also offer
excellent concealment.
Generally
ducks will be the first birds to come into the decoys, offering
some fast paced shooting before the geese arrive. White fronted
geese abound in the area and are generally easy to decoy as are
the Canada's. Snow goose populations have exploded and should
offer some fantastic shooting opportunities over large decoy spreads.
Hunts will usually be over by about 11 a.m. at which time we will
head back to the lodge. After lunch and perhaps a nap there will
be a chance to setup for an evening hunt of ducks, sandhill cranes
or upland game. This will be followed by a hearty supper and some
time to relax and relive the day's events and plan the upcoming
day's hunt.
